NDP statement on the situation in Venezuela

NDP Foreign Affairs Critic Hélène Laverdière (Laurier—Sainte-Marie) made the following statement today about the situation in Venezuela:

“New Democrats are deeply concerned about the ongoing political and economic crisis in Venezuela. Reports are emerging daily of the erosion of democracy, violence, and shortages of food, medicines and medical supplies.

Canada should be working through the Organization of American States (OAS) to support multilateral diplomatic initiatives. The OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro has invoked the Inter-American Democratic Charter regarding Venezuela, and Canada, as a member of the OAS, should support his efforts. Multilateral action is the best way to find a peaceful and democratic solution to the crisis in Venezuela.

Canada should also be playing a leading role in urging all sides in Venezuela to exercise restraint and engage in a political dialogue that respects legitimate grievances and differences of opinion. Canada must encourage the Venezuelan leadership to respect the Constitution and the rights of the National Assembly, the elected representatives of the Venezuelan people.

The Venezuelan people deserve peace, security and true democracy. We urge the Government of Canada to assist in finding a political solution and defend democracy in Venezuela.”
