NEW DEMOCRATS OUTRAGED OVER CONSERVATIVES' AID REDUCTION TO HAITI

MONTREAL - New Democrat Critic for International Development Hélène Laverdière has loudly criticized the Conservatives' plan to reduce development aid to Haiti.

"What the Globe and Mail reported yesterday is shocking," said the New Democrat MP (Laurier--Ste-Marie). "Once again, the Conservatives are doing this in an underhanded way, without consulting our partners or aid workers on the ground. This decision could have serious negative consequences as, more than three years after the devastating earthquake, there is still much to do to rebuild the country."

Canada has long played an important role in Haiti's development, a role that goes beyond the emergency services provided after the 2010 earthquake.

"Regrettably, the Conservatives think that Canada doesn't have a constructive role to play in Haiti's reconstruction," said Laverdière. "Instead of cutting funding without consulting anyone, Canada should lead with a long-term vision for sustainable development, including the development of strong democratic institutions."
