After years of being a leader on efforts at the UN Human Rights Council in addressing violence against women; this year Canada is determined to weaken and set-back the very standards that we have built up over the years. The oil sands and the Dutch disease

Dutch disease is a term to describe how the increased exploitation of natural resources in a country relates to a decline in other sectors of its economy, particularly the manufacturing sector. Studies have shown that the breakneck pace of the oil sands development has artificially inflated the Canadian dollar, making other types of industry less competitive. This creates an economic unbalance. I am not trying to be simplistic in criticizing the exploitation of our resources; however, I believe that resource exploitation must be done responsibly, taking both the economy and the environment into account. The price of the oil sands should be adjusted to reflect the cost of the environmental impact of extracting the oil. If this cost was included in the value, it would be extracted in a more sustainable manner and would contribute to stabilizing our economy.

The Conservative government refuses to take action in the fight against poverty

The gap between the rich and the poor is widening in Canada: more and more seniors and children are relying on food banks, and yet the Conservative government is pursuing its ideological attack on the social safety net that has sustained Canada for so long. This government appears to have walked away from its responsibilities toward the most disadvantaged among us, passing the cost of funding and administering various programs on to the provinces. One example would be housing programs and programs to fight against homelessness.

July 30th, 2012

Canadian leadership in international development

Canada must do more to fight against global poverty and respect its international commitments. Since the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were adopted in 2000, G20 countries, Canada included, have not succeeded in fully meeting the promises they made to developing countries. Unfortunately, the Conservative budget tabled this spring announced more than $320 million in cuts between now and 2015, which shows yet again this government's lack of interest in social justice, both within Canada and around the world. As for the NDP, we have never stopped calling on the government to establish a timeline to increase our international aid to 0.7% of our gross national product.
