LIBERALS MUST TAKE PRINCIPLED ACTION IN WAKE OF SAUDI ARABIAN HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES

NDP Foreign Affairs critic Hélène Laverdière issued the following statement:

As yet more stories emerge of Canadian-made military equipment being used to target Saudi dissidents, New Democrats are calling on the Liberal government to stop making excuses and start taking concrete action to stand up for human rights.

Today, reports emerged that Canadian-made tactical equipment was used by Saudi forces in raids against dissidents. This follows earlier photos revealing Canadian-made LAVs being used in Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen.

Foreign Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion repeatedly promised in the House of Commons that he would cancel export permits should there be new evidence of human rights violations. And Canadian export-control policy requires the government to cease transactions of arms when there is risk that they will be used to commit human rights violations.

We are calling on the Minister to take principled and immediate action to stand up for human rights, including a review of all existing permits, refusing to sign further export permits to Saudi Arabia, releasing all applicable human rights assessments, and agreeing to ‎Parliamentary oversight of arms exports controls as the NDP has proposed.

Unless the Liberal government finally agrees to act, Canadians cannot have confidence that arms manufactured in Canada are not being used for atrocious human rights abuses abroad, contrary to Canadian values.
